Highly pathogenic avian flu (H5N1) has been detected in a backyard flock of birds in Franklin County, Vermont, according to state officials. The owner and anyone else who had contact with the infected birds are being monitored by the Vermont Department of Health. The specific town where the birds resided remains undisclosed.

Although no human cases of H5N1 have been reported in New England, a growing number of cases have been documented across the United States. Since March 2024, over 60 people have been infected nationwide according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the CDC currently classifies H5N1 as low risk to human health, a rising chorus of health professionals is warning that rapid mutations could significantly alter its threat level. Documented symptoms in humans include conjunctivitis, fever, body aches, and nausea.

In a recent development, the CDC confirmed the “first severe case” of H5N1 in a human in Louisiana, leading to hospitalization. Over the past 30 years, around half of the roughly 900 people diagnosed with bird flu globally have sadly passed away.

Past Cases and Spreading Concern

This marks the fourth documented instance of H5N1 in a domestic flock in Vermont since 2022. While avian flu has spread to nearly 900 dairy herds across 16 states, officials emphasize that the strain detected in Franklin County is not the same as the one affecting dairy herds elsewhere.

Call for Vigilance

State and federal officials urge animal owners to remain vigilant. Recommendations include reporting any sick or dead birds or cattle and reviewing biosecurity measures to protect livestock.

Stay informed and help protect our poultry population from avian flu. Report any unusual signs or deaths of birds to your local animal health authorities.
