Azores Parliament Expresses Condolences for Storm Victims in Portugal
The Legislative Assembly of the Azores (ALRAA) has issued a formal motion of condolence following the devastating impact of recent storms across Portugal. The motion, approved during the February plenary session in Horta, Faial Island, acknowledges the loss of life and expresses solidarity with affected communities.
Expressions of Sorrow and Solidarity
The ALRAA conveyed “deep sorrow for the lives lost” and extended its “deepest condolences to the bereaved families.” The assembly also voiced its support for all those who have experienced loss or damage due to the storms, recognizing the challenging circumstances faced by impacted communities.
Recognition of Response Efforts
The condolence motion specifically highlighted the tireless efforts of various groups involved in the response and recovery operations. These include government officials, local authorities, firefighters, Civil Protection agents, security forces, military personnel, health workers, and citizens who contributed to rescue, assistance, and reconstruction efforts.
Call for Coordinated Recovery
Acknowledging the extent of the human and material losses, the ALRAA emphasized the importance of a “coordinated and effective response” to facilitate the recovery of affected areas. The assembly called for support for families, workers, and key sectors, particularly agriculture and production.
Island Region’s Shared Vulnerability
The ALRAA underscored the Autonomous Region of the Azores’ particular understanding of the challenges posed by adverse natural phenomena, given its island geography. The assembly reaffirmed its unity and cohesion with the rest of the nation during times of disaster.
Impact of Recent Depressions
The motion specifically referenced the impact of depressions Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta, which resulted in 18 deaths, numerous injuries and displacements, and widespread material damage throughout Portugal. The storms caused floods, landslides, and rockfalls, damaging homes, infrastructure, businesses, and agricultural lands.
Regions Particularly Affected
The ALRAA noted that the Central, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, and Alentejo regions were particularly hard hit, experiencing significant destruction and disruption to daily life, including road closures, school shutdowns, and interruptions to essential services like water, energy, and communications.
Motion Forwarded to National Leaders
The approved condolence motion has been formally sent to the President of the Republic, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, and the Prime Minister of Portugal.
