Latvian and UK Foreign Ministers discuss Ukraine Support and Security Cooperation
on December 1, 2025, Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže met with UK Foreign Secretary yvette Cooper during a working visit to London. Discussions centered on support for ukraine’s self-defense capabilities and the containment of Russia, alongside bilateral cooperation, strengthening NATO, transatlantic relations, and EU-UK relations. The ministers also addressed priorities for Latvia‘s upcoming two-year term on the UN Security Council, beginning January 1, 2026, noting the UK’s permanent membership.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže:
“I thank the United Kingdom for its significant contribution to the security and defense of Latvia and the Baltics, especially the presence of soldiers in our region – the multinational brigade in Estonia, the “East Guard” in Poland, regular participation in the Baltic airspace patrol mission, as well as leading the Joint expeditionary Force (JEF) and the Coalition of Goodwill (CoW).”
“The United Kingdom has always been Latvia’s friend and one of our closest allies in the fields of security and defense, in NATO, regionally and bilaterally, as well as in support of Ukraine – both by coordinating sanctions against Russia, especially the “shadow fleet” and its ecosystem, and jointly leading the Drone Coalition. This year, Latvia allocated 20 million EUR to the Drone Coalition, and next year plans 50 million EUR in support.”
“In connection with the situation in Ukraine and the process of peace negotiations,we agree: we must continue to maximally strengthen Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities, providing it with all kinds of support. All allies must continue to weaken russia, because it is not interested in peace – it aims to divide allies and weaken support for Ukraine, and is a threat to the entire international order.”
