Henry the Penguin: Rare Fairy Penguin Chick Finds Comfort with Plush Toy

A rare fairy penguin chick named Henry is receiving a little extra comfort at SEA LIFE Weymouth Adventure Park in Dorset, England. The tiny penguin, currently being hand-reared by keepers, has been given a plush penguin toy to keep him company while other eggs incubate.

A Dramatic Entrance for Henry

Henry hatched on January 30, 2026, and required assistance from the animal care team to break free from his shell. According to a statement from the park, “Henry had a dramatic entrance into the world, requiring gentle assistance from our expert animal care team after struggling to break free from his shell.”

The Smallest Penguin Species

Fairy penguins, also known as little blue penguins, are the smallest penguin species in the world, reaching approximately 30-40cm in height. They are native to the coastlines of southern Australia and Novel Zealand. Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park is home to the only colony of fairy penguins in Europe, making Henry’s birth a significant event.

Breeding Success at Weymouth

The colony at Weymouth was established in 2018 after 25 penguins were relocated from a sanctuary in Manly, Australia, that had to close. Since then, the park has successfully bred eleven fairy penguin chicks, with Henry being the latest addition, bringing the total number of little penguins at Weymouth to 42. The park hopes to create a sustainable population of fairy penguins in Europe. SEA LIFE Weymouth has invested over £100,000 into a purpose-built enclosure for the penguins.

A Trend of Comforting Plushies

Henry’s story echoes a similar recent event in Japan, where a young macaque named Punch was comforted with donated IKEA plush toys after being rejected by his mother. Updates on Punch’s progress have garnered global attention.

Keepers are hopeful that more chicks will hatch soon, and for now, Henry will enjoy the companionship of his plush toy.
