Apartment Floor Collapse in Badalona, Barcelona Injures Two and Displaces Fifteen Families

Badalona, Spain – A floor collapse in a residential building in Badalona, a city near Barcelona, on Wednesday injured two women and forced the evacuation of approximately fifteen families. The incident, which occurred shortly before 11:00 AM on the street of Virgin María de Lourdes in the Sant Antoni de Llefià neighborhood, has left the building structurally unsound and uninhabitable.
Incident Details
According to reports from firefighters, a 71-year-old woman fell three meters through a collapsed section of flooring into the apartment below.Her 40-year-old daughter was also injured. Both women were transported to Germans Trias I Pujol hospital in a non-life-threatening condition. Fortunately, the husband and another daughter of the injured woman were present in the apartment at the time of the collapse but were unharmed. No one was occupying the ground floor apartment.The collapse created a meaningful hole,revealing deteriorated structural elements. Following an inspection by the Bombers of the Generalitat and municipal services, authorities deemed all twelve apartments within the building uninhabitable.
Evacuation and Support for Residents
The building, constructed in 1963, was fully evacuated as a precautionary measure. Nine of the twelve apartments were occupied at the time of the incident. Badalona City Council is providing assistance to the displaced residents through the Basic Social Care Service 5 of Llefià.
Residents were briefly allowed to return to collect essential belongings with the assistance of firefighters. the City Council is currently working to determine whether residents can stay with family or if alternative accommodation will be required for the night.

Initial assessments indicate the collapsed floor was in “very bad condition,” leading to the decision to prevent residents from returning.The extent of the structural damage requires further investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and the long-term viability of the building. Authorities have not yet released information regarding the specific cause of the deterioration.
