Jessie Buckley Makes History at the 2026 BAFTAs
Jessie Buckley delivered a triumphant performance at the 79th British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, February 22, 2026, winning the Best Actress award for her role in Hamnet. This marks the first time an Irish performer has received this honor at the BAFTAs. The awards ceremony took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England.
A Historic Win for Buckley
Buckley was recognized for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet. Accepting the award, she expressed her gratitude, stating, “This really does belong to the women past, present and future who taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.” She also dedicated the award to her daughter, who has accompanied her on the awards circuit since she was six weeks classic, calling motherhood “the best role of my life.”
The Evening’s Other Winners and Notable Attendees
While Buckley celebrated a major win, Paul Mescal, also nominated for his role in Hamnet, did not win in the Best Supporting Actor category. Sean Penn took home the award for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another.
The event drew a star-studded crowd, including Cillian Murphy, who presented Buckley with her award. Other attendees included Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Rose Byrne, Kerry Washington, Timothée Chalamet, and Paul Mescal with his partner, Gracie Abrams.
Red Carpet Style Highlights
The BAFTAs red carpet showcased a variety of bold and elegant looks. Jessie Buckley herself stood out in an electric blue gown. Other notable fashion moments included Teyana Taylor in a dramatic brown outfit, Emma Stone in a daring backless black dress, and Kerry Washington in a navy gown with floral sequins. Alan Cumming also made a statement with a fringed overcoat and brightly colored hair.
Buckley’s Awards Season Success
This BAFTA win continues Buckley’s successful run during awards season, following her win at the Irish Film and Television Academy awards just two days prior. She has already received a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award for her performance in Hamnet, solidifying her position as a frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards.
