Bagatela Theater Reconstruction: SAO Architecture’s Winning Design Revealed
The bagatela Theater is set for a significant transformation with the unveiling of the winning reconstruction design by Krakow-based studio SAO Architecture. The “substantial” changes were presented at a press conference on November 28th.
SAO Architects’ design emerged victorious from the architectural competition announced on November 3, 2025. The competition jury, chaired by janusz Sepiol, Chief Architect of the City of Krakow, praised the design for its prosperous exterior solution, especially its exposure of the “skulicz pyro structures” while maintaining the building’s existing character. The jury also highlighted the limited demolition scope, respect for the existing basement renovation, functional solutions, a spacious entrance hall, and a well-considered rooftop cafe. While acknowledging a potential slight reduction in seating capacity due to acoustic considerations, the design was also commended for its thorough study of stage technology.
WXCA from warsaw secured second place, with no third or honorable mentions awarded due to the lower quality of the remaining submissions. A total of five projects were initially submitted, with one studio disqualified and three withdrawing during the competition process.
The redevelopment project will involve a near-complete reorganization of the Bagatela Theater’s interior.
Bagatela Theater in Krakow to Undergo Major Reconstruction

The Bagatela Theater in Krakow is set for a comprehensive reconstruction, promising an enhanced experience for both performers and audiences. The project, designed by SAO Architecture, focuses on modernizing the facility while preserving its iconic character.
Increased Seating and Improved Facilities
The auditorium will see a significant increase in capacity, expanding from the current 330 seats to 450.While the final number might potentially be slightly adjusted to optimize acoustics and viewing angles, the expansion will be achieved by steepening the auditorium’s geometry.Backstage areas will be wholly rebuilt, including dressing rooms and administrative spaces, and a revolving stage will be added. Currently unused space beneath the stage will be developed to house changing rooms and restrooms.

Facade transformation
The building’s exterior on Karmelicka Street will also undergo a transformation. The existing two square windows, framed by 10 vertical slats, will be replaced with four vertical glazings featuring stained glass windows. Four additional vertical openings will be created in the building’s attic.
Honoring the past, Embracing the Future
A key element of the design is the preservation and integration of Professor Witold Skulicz’s facade mosaic, a defining feature of the bagatela building.
In the project, the facade mosaic by Professor Witold Skulicz, which is characteristic of the Bagatela building, becomes the starting point for the entire composition of the facades and the inspiration for the interior design. Created in the 1960s, when architecture and art boldly experimented with form and ceramics as a vehicle for modern decoration – it is today a priceless commentary on the modernist explorations of the time. The concept honors this element in a special way: the mosaics remain the main accents of the façade from Krupnicza and Karmelicka Streets, and at the junction of the streets we design a stained glass window to illuminate the new foyer. Its color scheme grows out of the existing mosaic tones, and its simplified, abstract form is a contemporary dialogue with the original. In this way, the past corresponds with the future – the light of the city penetrates inside, and the foyer returns the favor with a play of light, shadow, color and reflections. Creating an unusual spectacle every day.
