The Rise of ‘Comfort Theater’ and Center Stage’s Production of ‘Baggage’
In an entertainment landscape often characterized by complex narratives and challenging themes, a growing appreciation for “comfort television” and, by extension, “comfort theater” has emerged. These productions offer a respite from the demands of daily life, prioritizing enjoyment and predictability over artistic experimentation. Lebanon’s Center Stage Community Theatre’s current offering, Baggage, exemplifies this trend, providing a lighthearted and charming experience for audiences.
A Playful Acknowledgment of Convention
Playwright Sam Bobrick directly addresses the play’s formulaic nature, acknowledging the predictable plot points to the audience through the character of Dr. Jonathon Alexander, a smarmy psychologist. This meta-theatrical approach, where the play winks at its own conventions, enhances the comedic effect and allows the audience to simply enjoy the ride. The premise centers around two seemingly mismatched individuals, Phyllis Novak (Lauren Johnson) and Bradley Naughton (Mark Livingston), whose initial animosity gives way to romance, a storyline familiar to many.
Strong Performances and Attention to Detail
Director Veronique Duprey has assembled a talented cast that delivers a natural and engaging performance. Mark Livingston shines as Bradley Naughton, imbuing the character with authenticity in both comedic and emotional moments. The pacing and timing are well-executed, and the set and lighting contribute to the overall ambiance. Even the pre-show and intermission music selections demonstrate a meticulous attention to detail.
A Warm and Charming Experience
Baggage doesn’t aim to be groundbreaking or thought-provoking; it simply strives to be sweet, charming, and comfortable. While the plot may not be particularly memorable, the warm feeling it evokes is a reward in itself. The production succeeds due to the fact that it is honest with its audience, offering a straightforward romantic comedy without pretense.
