Bam Adebayo’s Historic 83-Point Game: A Night to Remember
MIAMI — The Miami Heat witnessed a historic performance on Tuesday night as Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards, placing him second only to Wilt Chamberlain in the NBA’s all-time single-game scoring list.
“An absolutely surreal night,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
Adebayo’s Record-Breaking Performance
Adebayo’s night began with a remarkable 31-point first quarter, setting a new Heat record for points in a quarter. He continued his onslaught, reaching 43 points by halftime and 62 points by the end of the third quarter. Despite facing increasingly intense defensive pressure, including double, triple and even quadruple teams, Adebayo continued to score, consistently drawing fouls and converting from the free-throw line.
His final stat line was extraordinary: 20 of 43 from the field, 36 of 43 from the foul line, and 7 for 22 from three-point range.
Adebayo was visibly emotional as he embraced his mother, Marilyn Blount, after the game.
“Welp won’t have the highest career high in the house anymore,” Adebayo’s girlfriend, four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson, wrote on social media, “but at least it gives me something to go after.”
Breaking Heat and NBA Records
Adebayo’s dunk with 22 seconds left in the third quarter surpassed LeBron James’s Heat single-game record of 61 points, set on March 3, 2014. His 43-point first half was the second-best in at least the last 30 seasons, trailing only Karl-Anthony Towns’s 44 points for Minnesota against Charlotte on Jan. 22, 2024.
The NBA record for points in a first half remains at 53, shared by David Thompson and George Gervin, both achieved on April 9, 1978.
Historical Context
Adebayo’s 83 points surpassed Kobe Bryant’s career-high of 81 points, which had been the second-highest single-game total in NBA history for two decades. Only Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 100-point game remains ahead of Adebayo.
The last player to score 62 points through three quarters before Adebayo was Kobe Bryant, who achieved the same feat against the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 20, 2005.
The previous highest-scoring quarter in the NBA since Karl-Anthony Towns’s 32-point third quarter on March 14, 2022, was Adebayo’s 31-point first quarter. Prior to that, Klay Thompson held the record with 37 points in a quarter in 2015, followed by Kevin Love with 34 in 2016, and Carmelo Anthony with 33 in 2008.
The previous Heat record for points in a first quarter was 25, also held by LeBron James.
