Indianapolis Clowns Return to Baseball with Historic Banana Ball Victory

Tallahassee, FL – The Indianapolis Clowns, a former Negro League team, made a historic return to baseball on Friday night, defeating the Party Animals 4-2 in a Banana Ball Championship League game at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee. The game marked the Clowns’ debut in the unique, fast-paced format of Banana Ball, drawing a sold-out crowd of 6,700 fans.

A Return to Roots

The Indianapolis Clowns last played in 1989 and were a prominent barnstorming team before joining the Negro Leagues. The organization boasts a rich history, having featured legendary players like Hank Aaron during its operation from 1930 to 1989. Their return to the field is a significant moment for baseball history, bringing renewed attention to the legacy of the Negro Leagues.

Local Players Shine

The game held special significance for two Tallahassee natives: Malachi Mitchell, playing for the Indianapolis Clowns, and Tanner Thomas, suiting up for the Party Animals. Both players expressed their joy at returning to play in front of their hometown crowd.

Mitchell, a former outfielder for Florida A&M University (FAMU), scored a crucial run for the Clowns. Thomas, who played for Tallahassee State, also relished the opportunity to compete in Tallahassee. “There is no better feeling,” Mitchell said. “I haven’t stopped smiling since I showed up Wednesday night.” Thomas added, “Being back here in Tallahassee means the world…It feels great to be here, and I’m glad Tallahassee got to witness some history today.”

Jackie Bradley Jr. Joins the Clowns

Adding to the excitement, the Indianapolis Clowns have become the first team in Banana Ball to feature a full-time Major League Baseball (MLB) player. Jackie Bradley Jr., a World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox, is playing center field for the Clowns.

Mitchell’s Unique Style

Malachi Mitchell, nicknamed ‘Flash Tha Kid’ for his speed, debuted with a custom racing helmet, obtained from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to aid his base running.

Banana Ball’s Growing Popularity

The game was part of a weekend of Banana Ball action in Tallahassee, showcasing the growing popularity of the unconventional baseball format. The event drew a large crowd and provided a unique entertainment experience for fans.
