Bate Bay Beaches Crowned Australia’s Best for 2026

Bate Bay, a 4.8km stretch of coastline in the Sutherland Shire south of Sydney, has been named ‘Best Australian Beach’ for 2026 by Tourism Australia. The recognition highlights the area’s natural beauty, accessibility and vibrant community, attracting attention from both domestic and international tourists.

A Coastline Shaped by Story and Culture

The award encompasses nine beaches within Bate Bay, including Greenhills Beach, Wanda Beach, Elouera Beach, North Cronulla, Cronulla Beach, Blackwoods Beach, and Shelly Beach, as well as four ocean pools and Gunnamatta Bay Baths [1]. Located on Gweagal Country of the Dharawal nation, the beaches carry significant Indigenous names such as Gunnamatta, Wanda, Elouera and Cronulla [1].

What Sets Bate Bay Apart?

Tourism Australia’s Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer, compiled the list following a comprehensive study of Australia’s coastline and surrounding islands, using a 130-point evaluation criteria [1]. Farmer described Bate Bay as “Sydney’s longest, least crowded and most beautiful stretch of sand” [1]. Key factors in the decision included affordability, accessibility, and authenticity [3].

A significant factor contributing to Bate Bay’s appeal is Sutherland Shire Council’s decision not to charge for beach parking, a unique offering among Sydney councils [3]. Farmer noted the importance of this factor, stating it was a “really big issue” that resonated across the country [3].

A Beach for Everyone

Bate Bay offers a diverse range of beach experiences. Greenhills Beach, a 3.3km stretch, is known for its spaciousness and is popular with walkers and dog owners [2]. Wanda Beach, located at the northern end of Cronulla, provides a slightly more secluded atmosphere [2]. The bay caters to everyone from lap swimmers and families with boogie boards to experienced surfers [2].

Looking Ahead

The award is expected to boost tourism to the Sutherland Shire and increase national and international awareness of the region’s coastal attractions [3]. Farmer likewise emphasized the need for a national framework for coastal protection, recognizing the economic and recreational value of Australia’s beaches [1].
