Bavaria-Wide Emergency Alert Test Scheduled for March 12, 2026
On Thursday, March 12, 2026, Bavaria will conduct a statewide test of its emergency warning systems, including a first-time test of the all-clear signal via Cell Broadcast. The drill, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., aims to ensure the readiness of the state’s alerting infrastructure.
What to Expect During the Test
The Bavarian Reporting and Situation Center (BayMLZ) will initiate the test by sending warning level 2 alerts via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS). These alerts will be delivered through warning apps such as NINA, KATWARN, and BIWAPP, as well as via Cell Broadcast. The official all-clear signal will follow at 11:30 a.m.
According to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, the test of the all-clear via Cell Broadcast is a novel component of the Bavarian test alarm system. Jonas Hönle of tz.de reports that this function has never been tested in previous Bavarian drills.
Multiple Alerts Possible
Residents may receive multiple warning messages due to the involvement of integrated control centers and district administration authorities, which are also authorized to issue warnings via MoWaS with a slight delay. Municipalities may also activate additional warning devices, including sirens (where available), digital display boards, and loudspeaker announcements.
Sirens in Munich
Notably, sirens will not sound in Munich, as they were dismantled after the Cold War.
Understanding Cell Broadcast
Cell Broadcast technology has been capable of reaching all mobile phones in Germany with reception since February 2023, without requiring users to install an additional app.
Future Testing
A nationwide warning day is already planned for September 10, 2026, to further test the country’s warning systems.
