Red Brick Center Art Class

Aspen adult learners can build machine-sewing skills this winter through a four-session introductory course returning to the Red Brick Center for the Arts.

The “Beginner Sewing: Fabric Collage & Sewing Fundamentals” series runs from 5 to 7 p.m. between Nov. 11 and Dec. 9.

Hilary Forsyth leads the beginner-friendly curriculum, covering machine operations and basic stitch applications through a fabric collage project. Forsyth started offering the course in 2025.

She also teaches art at Aspen Community School, a position she has held since 2003, and runs children’s summer camps at Anderson Ranch Center Arts Center.

“I’m a firm believer that everybody should know the basics of sewing,” Forsyth said.

Curriculum and Equipment Basics

The course uses a wandering schoolhouse model to accommodate students working at different speeds and comfort levels. On the first day, participants learn to thread machines, wind bobbins, and handle equipment.

Students progress to fabric collage, utilizing solid and print fabrics joined with fusible web. Heat from an iron bonds the pieces to a background before participants add decorative stitches.

Finished collages can become handmade cards, jacket patches, or other decorative items.

Threading the machine presents the primary challenge for beginners.

“It has to be done perfectly,” Forsyth said. “If it’s not threaded right, the machine will jam, and then it’s a heavy tool that does nothing. It turns into a doorstop underneath your desk.”

Joyce Meredith Assists Students with Technical Machine Skills

Aspen local Joyce Meredith assists students in overcoming technical hurdles alongside Forsyth. Meredith brings experience as a former aerospace engineer and feature film seamstress.

“I go around to each person and see what they’re struggling with and how they can get more comfortable with the machine because you can’t really learn garment construction until you’re comfortable using the equipment,” Meredith said.

Registration costs $160, including all supplies. Machines are provided, though students may bring their own equipment.

Participants leave with practical repair abilities, such as fixing clothes or sewing on buttons. Individuals wanting extra practice can borrow sewing machines from the Pitkin County Library using a free library card. More information is available on the Red Brick Center for the Arts event calendar.
