Landslide at Bantargebang Integrated Waste Site Claims Lives, Disrupts Jakarta’s Waste Management

A landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Site in Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday, March 8, 2026, resulted in at least four fatalities and disrupted waste disposal operations from Jakarta. The incident occurred when a large section of the waste pile collapsed, impacting a queue of trucks belonging to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

Details of the Landslide

The landslide occurred in Zone IV of the TPST Bantargebang. Residents involved in the evacuation process confirmed the discovery of the victims buried within the landslide debris. According to reports, one of the deceased was a truck driver from Karawang, although the remaining three were migrant workers operating as traders in the vicinity of the waste site .

Video footage circulating on social media showed the landslide engulfing trucks waiting to unload their cargo. The collapse also temporarily blocked the flow of the Kali Asem river .

Response and Mitigation Efforts

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has initiated stabilization efforts to prevent further landslides. These efforts include the restructuring and strengthening of the waste pile zones to restore stability and ensure operational safety .

Despite the ongoing cleanup, waste management services are continuing. One temporary disposal point at TPST Bantargebang was opened overnight to maintain the flow of garbage trucks from Jakarta, while the other two disposal points are undergoing repairs .

The DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) has requested that sub-district environmental agencies temporarily suspend waste deliveries to TPST Bantargebang until the evacuation process is complete .

The Bantargebang Integrated Waste Site, covering 110.3 hectares, has been in operation since 1989. It receives an average of 6,500 to 7,000 tons of waste daily . The site utilizes a digital weighing system with load cell sensors and a web-based application for monitoring waste input and output . The area is divided into five zones for waste disposal :

  • Zone I: 18.3 hectares
  • Zone II: 17.7 hectares
  • Zone III: 25.41 hectares
  • Zone IV: 11.0 hectares
  • Zone V: 9.5 hectares

In addition to landfill operations, TPST Bantargebang includes composting facilities, a waste-to-energy power plant, a leachate treatment installation and a vehicle washing station for garbage trucks .
