Belfast City Airport Runway Closed Following Aer Lingus Emergency Landing
Belfast City Airport’s runway is closed Sunday evening following an emergency incident involving an Aer Lingus plane. The incident occurred during landing in strong winds, prompting a full airport emergency response.
Hard Landing and Nose Wheel Collapse
According to Emerald Airlines, who operated the positioning flight for Aer Lingus, the aircraft experienced a hard landing due to adverse weather conditions. Images circulating online show the plane’s nose wheel collapsed, with the nose resting on the runway tarmac.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, despite the incident. The flight originated in Edinburgh, arriving at Belfast City Airport at approximately 4:00 PM GMT. Only crew members, totaling four, were onboard.
Airport Response and Diverted Flights
Upon declaring a full emergency, airport authorities immediately deployed police, fire service, and ambulance crews to the scene. Firefighters responded at 16:15 GMT, sending multiple units as part of their standard protocol for such emergencies. While firefighters remained on standby as a precaution, they did not need to take immediate action.
Two incoming flights, scheduled to land at Belfast City Airport from London City and Leeds Bradford, were diverted to Belfast International Airport.
Runway Closure and Updates
As a result of the incident, Belfast City Airport’s runway remains closed for the remainder of Sunday. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates and potential flight disruptions.
