Man Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff in Bergen
Bergen, Norway – A man in his 40s was arrested late Wednesday evening in Åsane, Bergen, after a prolonged standoff with police that began earlier that day. The man had discharged firearms towards police and into the surrounding area, leading to a tense situation lasting over half a day.
Timeline of Events
The incident began Wednesday morning when police received reports of a man firing shots. Repeated attempts at dialogue and negotiation failed, according to Tore-Andre Brakstad, the police’s operations leader. The man, described as unstable, had legal access to several registered firearms as a member of a shooting group.
Around 8:00 PM local time, the man resumed firing, prompting police to take action. Countermeasures, including the employ of gas, were deployed to force the man out of his home. During this time, flames and smoke were observed emanating from the residence. The suspect was ultimately apprehended outside the house at 9:43 PM.
Police Response and Safety Measures
Throughout the day, a significant police presence was maintained at the scene, including armed sharpshooters. Authorities ensured the safety of the surrounding area, instructing nearby schools and kindergartens to maintain students and staff indoors. Residents were also advised to stay inside or avoid the area.
“An active shooting, even if there is no danger to third parties, is not something the police want,” stated task leader Per Magne Vabø. “That is why we have initiated countermeasures.”
Charges and Investigation
The man has been charged with aggravated threats with a firearm, with the police as the offended party. He is now under the care of the health department. The Special Unit for Police Affairs has been notified and will conduct a routine investigation into the incident.
No injuries to police personnel were reported during the operation.
