Wyoming Lawmaker Investigation: Rebecca Bextel and Campaign Check Controversy

Cheyenne, WY – A special committee of the Wyoming House of Representatives is investigating conservative activist Rebecca Bextel after she delivered campaign checks directly to lawmakers on the House floor earlier this month. The incident, dubbed “Checkgate,” has dominated the 2026 legislative session and sparked questions about potential undue influence.

The Incident and Initial Response

On February 9, 2026, Rebecca Bextel walked onto the House floor after lawmakers had adjourned and handed checks, totaling $1,500 each, from a Teton County donor to four Republican representatives: Darin McCann, Marlene Brady, Joe Webb, and Christopher Knapp. The House unanimously voted to launch a special investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the delivery of the checks.

Bextel’s Testimony

Bextel testified before the House Special Investigative Committee on February 26, 2026, describing herself as a fundraiser with ambitions to double the $400,000 she raised for Republican candidates in 2024. She stated her intention was simply to “expeditiously hand candidates checks” and denied any wrongdoing.

During questioning, Bextel stated she had “trouble recalling” specific details related to the check deliveries, including whether she asked Representative Nina Webber to escort her onto the House floor. She as well acknowledged a recent “romantic vacation” with her husband to Mexico.

Bextel expressed grievances regarding “developers enriching themselves” and mitigation fees for affordable housing, and mentioned that rocks had been thrown through her windows in Jackson due to her opposition to these fees.

Lawmaker Testimony

Representative Karlee Provenza, who initiated the investigation after photographing Bextel handing a check to Representative McCann, testified that Bextel was “escorted” onto the House floor by Representative Webber. Provenza described the action as an “egregious use of the Wyoming House floor” and stated she felt obligated to share the information with the public.

Representatives Webb, McCann, Brady, and Knapp all testified, confirming they received the checks. Each maintained that the contributions would not influence their votes. Representative Knapp stated the check was “part of free speech.”

Representative Webber testified she did not recall being asked to escort Bextel onto the floor or knowing the purpose of her visit.

Ongoing Investigation

The House Special Investigative Committee is continuing its investigation. The committee has reviewed text message records between Bextel and several lawmakers, as well as security footage showing Bextel handing out the checks within ten seconds of entering the House floor.

Political Context

Bextel unsuccessfully ran for the chairmanship of the Wyoming Republican Party in May 2025. The Teton County GOP is considering censuring Bextel and stripping her of her post amid the controversy.
