BYU Football Navigates Big 12 Media Days Amidst Quarterback Uncertainty
FRISCO,Texas – BYU football recently participated in the annual Big 12 Media Days, held at The Star, the dallas Cowboys’ training facility. The event provided a platform for the program to address key storylines heading into the 2025 season, most notably the evolving quarterback situation.
Adapting to the Power Conference Landscape
Entering its third year as a member of a Power Four conference, BYU is no longer a newcomer to the Big 12.The program is establishing a consistent presence and navigating the increased scrutiny that comes with competing at a higher level. This year’s media day appearance showcased a program increasingly comfortable on the national stage. According to a recent report by the NCAA, programs transitioning to Power Five conferences typically experience a 15-20% increase in media exposure within the first three years.
Head coach Kalani Sitake represented the Cougars, accompanied by five players, including wide receiver Chase Roberts, who earned preseason All-big 12 honors. the team’s participation signals a commitment to engaging with the media and fans as they prepare for another competitive season.
The Retzlaff Situation: A Waiting Game
Much of the attention at Big 12 Media Days centered around the status of quarterback Jake Retzlaff. Coach Sitake faced repeated questioning regarding the team’s plans at the position for the upcoming year. While acknowledging Retzlaff’s contributions – he led BYU to an impressive 11-2 record and an Alamo Bowl victory last season – Sitake remained deliberately reserved in his comments.
“I think right now,I mean, first of all,I love Jake Retzlaff. We love Jake Retzlaff and appreciate all that he’s done for our program,” Sitake stated. “I think it’ll be inappropriate for me to make a statement on his situation first. I think that’s his right. I think it’s a private matter that he can speak for himself, and I’m going to give him the opportunity to do that.”
This approach suggests a respect for player privacy and a desire to allow Retzlaff to address his future directly. The situation mirrors similar instances in college football where players utilize the transfer portal, and coaches frequently enough defer to the player’s timeline for announcements.
Hillstead’s Development and the Quarterback Depth
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Retzlaff, Coach Sitake expressed confidence in the quarterbacks currently within the program.A key figure in this equation is McCae Hillstead, a transfer from Utah State who joined the Cougars during the spring window of 2024.
“I think naturally, just being here a second year is going to be huge for him,” Sitake explained to KSL Sports. “I know that being in that quarterback room was really helpful for him.”
Hillstead’s second year provides an opportunity for increased familiarity with the offensive system and improved chemistry with his teammates. This developmental period is crucial for any transfer quarterback, allowing them to refine their skills and compete effectively for playing time. The quarterback position is increasingly competitive nationwide, with the transfer portal seeing a 30% increase in quarterback movement in the last two seasons, according to data from 247Sports. BYU’s ability to cultivate depth at this critical position will be vital for sustained success in the Big 12.
