American professional sports were shaken by the match-fixing scandal.

It was revealed that closing pitcher Emmanuel Clase and starting pitcher Luis Ortiz of Cleveland in Major League Baseball (MLB) received money from gamblers and manipulated pitches, including adjusting velocity.

MLB Pitchers Emmanuel clase and Carlos Otis Indicted on Sports Betting and Fraud Charges

Two Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers, Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Carlos Otis, have been indicted on federal charges related to sports betting fraud, according to reports from The Athletic and other news outlets. The charges include wire fraud, receiving illicit payments linked to sports betting, manipulating pitch outcomes, and laundering proceeds from sports betting. if convicted on all counts, they could face up to 65 years in prison.

The U.S.Federal Court indictment alleges that Clase began participating in the scheme in May 2023, while otis joined in June 2024.

Specifically, the indictment details an incident on April 16th, where Clase allegedly communicated with a gambler via text message and phone call immediately before entering a game in the bottom of the 8th inning – a violation of MLB rules prohibiting cell phone use during games. Gamblers subsequently placed bets that Clase’s pitch velocity would be below 97.95 mph. Clase then delivered a pitch as pre-arranged, resulting in a payout of approximately $11,000 to the gamblers, from whom Clase received a kickback.

Otis is accused of conspiring with a gambler to manipulate pitches during games on June 15th and 27th. He allegedly received $12,000 for making specific pitches, with an additional $12,000 being paid to Clase for arranging the scheme.

Clase, a dominant closer for the Guardians, has been a three-time American League saves leader (through 2024). In 2023, he appeared in 74 games, recording 47 saves with a 0.61 ERA, and was a Cy Young Award finalist. He has recorded 24 saves in 48 games this season.

MLB began investigating the pair in July after noticing unusually high betting activity related to their pitching patterns. Both pitchers were temporarily suspended, and the inquiry was turned over to federal authorities.

This case follows similar allegations of sports betting manipulation in the National Basketball Association (NBA) last month, where former and current NBA players, including Portland coach Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, and Miami’s Terry Rozier, were arrested by the FBI.
