Bill Cosby Ordered to Pay $59.25 Million in Civil Sexual Assault Case
Bill Cosby has been found liable by a California civil jury for drugging and sexually assaulting Donna Motsinger in 1972, with the total damages awarded reaching $59.25 million. The verdict, delivered after a nearly two-week trial in Santa Monica, marks another legal consequence for the 88-year-ancient comedian amidst decades of sexual misconduct allegations.
Damages Breakdown
The jury initially awarded Motsinger $17.5 million in compensatory damages for past harm and $1.75 million for future damages, encompassing mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and emotional distress. An additional $40 million was subsequently awarded in punitive damages as reported by ABC7.
The Allegations
Donna Motsinger alleged that she met Cosby while working as a waitress in Sausalito, California, and that he invited her to a stand-up show. She claims Cosby gave her wine and pills he presented as aspirin, after which she lost consciousness. Motsinger awoke at her home partially undressed, believing she had been drugged and sexually assaulted according to the BBC.
Cosby’s Defense and Appeal
Cosby’s legal team, led by Jennifer Bonjean, argued that Motsinger’s allegations were based on speculation and lacked concrete evidence. They maintained Cosby’s denial of the accusations. Bonjean has stated the defense intends to appeal the verdict as reported by the BBC.
Previous Legal Battles and Allegations
This verdict follows Cosby’s 2021 release from prison in Pennsylvania after his sexual assault conviction was overturned on a technicality. He had been serving a sentence related to the case brought by Andrea Constand. Prior to this, in 2022, a California jury awarded $500,000 to Judy Huth, who alleged Cosby sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion when she was a teenager according to the New York Times. More than 60 women have publicly accused Cosby of sexual misconduct over the years, all of which he denies.
Motsinger’s Statement
“This verdict is not just about me — it’s about finally being heard and holding Mr. Cosby accountable,” Motsinger said in a statement. “I have carried the weight of what happened to me for more than 50 years. It never goes away. Today, a jury saw the truth and held him accountable. That means everything. I hope this gives strength to other survivors who are still waiting for their moment to be heard.” as reported by ABC7.
