Worldwide Music Group too Recycle 400,000+ Concert T-Shirts

Over 400,000 unsold concert T-shirts are being diverted from landfills and given a new life through a groundbreaking recycling initiative led by Universal Music Group (UMG).This project highlights a growing commitment to sustainability in music and responsible merchandise practices.

UMG’s merchandise division, Bravado, has long held substantial quantities of unsold apparel in its warehouse. Recognizing teh environmental impact, they partnered with Spanish textile manufacturer Hallotex to implement a comprehensive upcycling solution.

Instead of donation – which can often result in textiles ending up in waste streams – the T-shirts are being shipped to Morocco. There, Hallotex will break down the fabric into cotton yarn and re-spin it into over 280,000 new, 100% cotton T-shirts for use by UMG artists this fall. Any materials unsuitable for recycling will be repurposed into housing insulation,ensuring minimal waste.

This initiative reflects a broader industry shift towards eco-conscious merchandise, notably driven by artists catering to environmentally aware audiences. The project demonstrates a proactive approach to reducing the environmental footprint of the music industry and promoting sustainable merchandise options.
