Birmingham City Women Acquired by Owners in Landmark Deal
Birmingham City Women have been acquired by Shelby Companies Limited, an affiliate of Knighthead Capital Management, alongside a group of independent investors including former England international Karen Carney and former world No. 1 tennis player Kim Clijsters. The move formally separates the women’s team from the men’s operating company and aims to bolster revenues and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
Ownership Restructuring
Shelby Companies Limited acquired 97% of Birmingham City Women FC, with the remaining 3% purchased by the group of independent investors. This transaction mirrors similar moves in the Women’s Super League, such as Chelsea Women’s sale to BlueCo in June 2024 and Aston Villa Women’s transfer to V Sports.
Key Investors
Alongside Karen Carney and Kim Clijsters, the investment group includes several prominent female business leaders and global professional icons. Carney, a former Birmingham City Women and England player, and Clijsters, a three-time US Open champion, bring significant profiles to the ownership structure.
Knighthead Capital Management’s Involvement
Shelby Companies Limited serves as the holding vehicle through which Knighthead Capital Management controls Birmingham City. Knighthead Capital Management, co-founded by Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner, initially acquired a controlling share in the men’s club in July 2023 and completed a full takeover in November 2024.
On-Pitch Ambitions
Birmingham City Women are currently competing in the Women’s Super League 2 and are in contention for promotion to the Women’s Super League ahead of its planned expansion for the 2026-27 campaign. Despite a recent 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace Women, they remain in a strong position, sitting second in the league.
Operational Continuity
The club has stated that there will be no immediate changes to staffing or football operations following the acquisition. The club’s leadership team will continue to manage day-to-day operations.
Statements from Club Officials
Jeremy Dale, Chief Executive Officer of Birmingham City, called the deal “a pivotal moment” for the club, highlighting Birmingham City’s strong heritage in the women’s game and the significance of having Karen Carney and Kim Clijsters as investors.
The Birmingham City Women’s Football Club Board expressed ambition to surpass previous achievements, both domestically and internationally.
