The Lifesaving Act of Blood Donation: Ensuring a Stable Supply in Tucumán Province
Blood donation remains a critical component of healthcare in Tucumán Province, Argentina, ensuring a consistent supply for surgeries, oncological treatments, accident victims and maternal health. Authorities emphasize that donating blood is a voluntary, altruistic act essential for saving lives, and are working to address recent declines in donations due to public health concerns.
The Importance of Voluntary Donation
The Blood Bank of Tucumán Province consistently highlights the importance of voluntary blood donation as a gesture of solidarity. Donations are vital to meet the ongoing demand for transfusions across various medical needs. Dr. Felicitas Agote, head of the Blood Bank Division of the Province, encourages individuals in quality health to donate regularly.
“We want to invite, as we usually do, all those people who are in good health and who want to help save lives, to donate blood at our institution or at any of our donation stations,” Dr. Agote stated.
Who Needs Blood Transfusions?
The necessitate for blood transfusions is constant and diverse. Patients requiring blood include those undergoing surgeries, receiving oncological treatments, recovering from accidents, and pregnant women. The Blood Bank strives to meet this continuous demand and improve patient outcomes.

Addressing Donation Declines During the Pandemic
Despite the ongoing need, blood donation rates have decreased, particularly due to public health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Agote assures the public that the Blood Bank maintains strict safety protocols.
“In our institution, we do not have infected patients hospitalized. All our staff perform with the personal protective equipment and preventive measures established by the Ministry of Public Health, as appropriate,” Dr. Agote explained.
Authorities are actively working to raise awareness and reassure potential donors that donating blood is safe and essential, even during the pandemic. They emphasize that the need for blood persists for patients with various conditions, not just those related to COVID-19.
Legal Framework Supporting Voluntary Donation
Blood donation in Argentina is governed by national law 22,990, which explicitly defines it as a voluntary and supportive act. Article 43 of this law prohibits any form of payment or commercialization of blood or its components. This legal framework reinforces the altruistic nature of blood donation.
