Blue Jackets Edge Rangers in Overtime After Dramatic Comeback

NEW YORK — Kirill Marchenko scored his second goal of the game 1:04 into overtime, lifting the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-4 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. The win came after the Blue Jackets squandered a four-goal lead in the third period.

Wild Third Period Fuels Blue Jackets’ Victory

Columbus built a commanding 4-0 lead through two periods, with goals from Adam Fantilli, Marchenko, Sean Monahan and Mathieu Olivier. Although, the Rangers mounted a furious comeback in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals to force overtime.

Vladislav Gavrikov and Gabe Perreault sparked the Rangers’ rally with goals just 54 seconds apart. Will Borgen then scored to bring the Rangers within one, and Perreault completed the comeback with the tying goal at 15:46 of the third period.

Despite the Rangers’ momentum, Marchenko secured the win for Columbus in overtime, scoring from the left face-off circle with a shot that deflected off Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
