Bochum Boosts Community Engagement with summer Sports & Play Initiatives
Bochum is embracing an active summer season, rolling out a diverse range of initiatives designed to encourage physical activity and community spirit across its districts. From playful ground markings to competitive sports events and engaging tours, the city is offering something for everyone.
New Playgrounds Spark Active Fun in Gerthe & Wattenscheid
Eleven locations throughout Gerthe and Wattenscheid are now home to vibrant, interactive play areas. These aren’t customary playgrounds; instead, colorful ground foils depict engaging movement games – think hopscotch-style paths, obstacle courses mimicking athletic training, and imaginative activity zones. Developed by local design agency Glückauf Design, these installations aim to inspire spontaneous play and physical activity in children with minimal prompting. The durable surfaces are designed to withstand regular use for at least two years, providing a lasting benefit to the community. This initiative reflects a growing trend in urban planning, with cities increasingly recognizing the importance of “playable spaces” – environments that naturally encourage movement and interaction. Studies show that access to such spaces can increase children’s physical activity levels by up to 25%.
Five of these playful surfaces are located on Lorraine Straße in Gerthe, while six are strategically positioned around central hubs in Wattenscheid, including the district office, the old market square, and the town hall. “Our goal is to inject energy and vibrancy into these neighborhoods while simultaneously promoting a more active lifestyle for our younger residents,” explains a city spokesperson.
Wattenscheid’s Alten markt Comes Alive with Beach Vibes & Competition
The Alten Markt in Wattenscheid is transforming into a summer hotspot from July 18th to 20th with a beach and street food festival. Beyond the tempting array of food trucks and live music, the festival will feature a competitive beach volleyball tournament. Regional teams will battle it out on Saturday, culminating in an exhibition match at 4 p.m. showcasing professional players like NEJC Zemljak and Yannik Ahr.The festival’s entertainment lineup includes DJ Byrush and the band Color FX. Sunday will be dedicated to open play on the sand court, while younger attendees can enjoy a dedicated game zone. Adding a unique element, a “plogging” campaign – a combination of jogging and litter collection – will take place on Sunday from 5 p.m., with the Primusplus association providing equipment for up to 25 participants. Plogging, originating in Sweden, has gained international traction as a lasting and active way to contribute to environmental cleanup.
Bochum Shines on the World Stage: University Games Participation
Bochum is proudly participating in the international World University Games, running from July 16th to 27th. The Lohrheidestadion will host the athletics competitions, while the Century Hall will be the venue for the dynamic 3×3 basketball tournaments, including wheelchair basketball. A team of 16 students representing Bochum will compete, showcasing the city’s athletic talent.

Celebrating Sports Thru Local Business & Guided Exploration
Wattenscheid will host a captivating shop window competition throughout July, challenging local businesses to creatively showcase the theme of sports in their displays. Establishments like hearing acoustics Brasgalla and other retailers are participating, with a jury tasked with selecting the most innovative and engaging window display. This initiative fosters community involvement and adds a festive atmosphere to the city center.
Complementing the window competition, a series of sporting city tours will be offered in July and August, available on foot or by bicycle. These tours will highlight Bochum’s sporting history and landmarks. Additionally, a football holiday leisure program is being organized by the Schwarz-Weiß Eppendorf association, and other sports clubs are encouraged to submit their own events.
