Boston Logan Airport Maintains Smooth Operations Amidst Government Shutdown

Despite a partial government shutdown impacting airports across the nation, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is currently experiencing normal operations with minimal security delays. This is due to the continued work of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents and the implementation of new technologies designed to streamline the screening process.

Current Status at Logan Airport

As of March 12, 2026, Massport reports no TSA staffing issues at Logan Airport. TSA agents, deemed essential personnel, continue to report for duty despite working without pay during the shutdown. Pre-check lanes are also operating normally, contributing to efficient passenger flow. Massport recommends passengers still allow ample time for travel, however.

National Impact of the Shutdown

The current government shutdown, which began on February 14, has halted funding for the Department of Homeland Security, the agency overseeing the TSA. While Logan Airport has remained unaffected, other airports, including those in Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta, have experienced significant delays and hours-long security lines. These disruptions raise concerns about potential issues during the upcoming spring break travel season.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Now Available

In January 2026, Logan Airport implemented TSA PreCheck® Touchless ID in Terminals A, B, and E. This new biometric technology allows eligible TSA PreCheck members to verify their identity using facial comparison, eliminating the require for a physical ID or boarding pass. The feature is available with participating airlines:

  • Terminal A: Delta Air Lines
  • Terminal B: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines
  • Terminal E: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines

“We are excited to offer this cutting-edge option to our travelers, reducing wait times and leading to a more streamlined security screening process,” said Bob Allison, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Massachusetts.

Global Entry Restarted

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has restarted Global Entry services on Wednesday, February 26, 2026, after temporarily halting the program due to the shutdown. Global Entry allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to use expedited kiosks when entering the U.S., saving time at ports of entry.

Past Shutdown Experiences

The current situation mirrors experiences during the government shutdown last fall, which was the longest in U.S. History, lasting 43 days. During that shutdown, nearly 300 Logan’s TSA agents received $10,000 bonuses from DHS for maintaining perfect attendance.

Security Wait Times

Current security wait times at Logan International Airport vary throughout the day. As of March 12, 2026, typical wait times range from 2 minutes to 28 minutes, with longer waits between 11 am and 2 pm. TSA wait times are subject to change.
