Botafogo Faces FIFA Sanction Over Zenit Debt, Appeals Decision
Rio de Janeiro – Botafogo has been sanctioned by FIFA and ordered to pay approximately R$35 million (roughly $7 million USD) to Zenit Saint Petersburg for outstanding debts related to the transfer of forward Artur, as reported by Brazilian media outlet GE.
The ruling, issued by FIFA’s Player Status Chamber (PSC), requires Botafogo to settle the debt within 45 days. However, the club has announced its intention to appeal the decision, which could potentially extend the deadline.
Details of the Debt
The outstanding amount stems from three unpaid installments of €1.9 million (approximately R$11.4 million each) due in March, June, and October 2025, along with accrued interest and a fine of €114,000. The total cost of Artur’s transfer was €10 million (approximately R$62 million at the time of the January 2025 signing), with Botafogo acquiring 80% of his economic rights.
Potential Transfer Ban
This is not the first time Botafogo has faced sanctions from FIFA regarding transfer debts. The club previously received a transfer ban for failing to meet obligations related to the purchase of Almada earlier in the year. With this latest conviction, Botafogo risks facing another transfer ban, preventing the club from registering new players if the debt is not paid.
Artur’s Performance
Since joining Botafogo in January 2025, Artur has made 59 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 5 assists. He inherited the iconic number 7 shirt previously worn by Luiz Henrique, who transferred to Zenit as part of the deal that brought Artur to Brazil.
Botafogo’s Response
The club’s directors intend to formally challenge FIFA’s decision, hoping to negotiate a more favorable resolution. The outcome of the appeal will determine whether Botafogo can avoid further transfer restrictions and continue to strengthen its squad.
This situation adds another layer of complexity to Botafogo’s preparations for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where they are set to compete against the Seattle Sounders, Atlético de Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain in Group B.
