Vega High School volleyball player Madelynn Wellman wins athlete of the week
Madelynn Wellman of Vega High School earned the Girls Athlete of the Week honors from Press Pass Sports following a standout regular-season finish for the Lady Longhorns. The sophomore played a critical role as Vega secured a share of the District 1-2A title with wins over Highland Park and Sanford-Fritch, Press Pass Sports reported.
District title runs through strong performances
Against Highland Park, Wellman posted a double-fiddle stat line with 14 assists, 12 kills, and eight digs. She followed that up against Sanford-Fritch by recording 19 assists, nine kills, seven digs, and seven aces. The victories allowed Vega to tie the Lady Eagles for the district championship. Head coach Berklee Norris noted that defeating Sanford-Fritch ended a three-game losing streak against the opponent and provided essential momentum for the postseason.
Playoff preparation and role adjustments
As Vega enters the UIL Class 2A Division I playoffs, Wellman carries season totals of 306 kills, 262 digs, 188 assists, and 51 aces. Norris shifted the sophomore to a setter and outside hitter role midway through the campaign. Wellman now leads the squad in both assists and kills. Norris stated that Wellman has developed better mental focus during matches. Wellman acknowledged that she handles on-court frustration better than she did during her freshman season.
