‘GOAT’ Leads Quiet Box Office Weekend, Edges Out ‘Wuthering Heights’

Sony Pictures Animation’s “GOAT” took in $17 million, while Warner Bros.’ “Wuthering Heights” earned $14.2 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday . Both films are in their second weekend of release.

it was a quiet weekend at movie theaters across the country, with new releases all opening under $10 million. This included the faith-based sequel “I Can Only Imagine 2,” the Glen Powell black comedy “How to Develop a Killing,” and the horror film “Psycho Killer,” which currently holds a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A bright spot was Baz Luhrmann’s immersive documentary “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,” which earned $3.3 million from only 325 locations in its limited IMAX release. The film is set to expand to nationwide distribution on February 27.

“These somewhat slower weekends can be a land of opportunity,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for Comscore .

‘GOAT’ Performance and Details

“GOAT” experienced a slight drop of 38% in its second weekend, which the studio attributes to positive word-of-mouth. The Stephen Curry-produced movie, featuring Caleb McLaughlin (“Stranger Things”) voicing the lead character, has grossed over $58.3 million domestically. Globally, its total earnings stand at $102.3 million .

‘Wuthering Heights’ Performance

“Wuthering Heights” saw a 57% decrease from its opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $60 million. Internationally, it added another $26.3 million, pushing its global total to $151.7 million against an $80 million production budget. The United Kingdom remains its top international market, with earnings of $22.5 million .

Other Box Office Results

Third place went to Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s “I Can Only Imagine 2,” a sequel to the 2018 film that earned $86 million against a $7 million budget. The sequel opened with $8 million, in line with expectations, and received an A+ CinemaScore.

Amazon and MGM’s “Crime 101” fell 59% in its second weekend, earning $5.8 million and taking fourth place. The Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo heist thriller has now made $24.7 million against a reported $90 million budget.

“Send Help” rounded out the top five with $4.5 million.

“How to Make a Killing” landed in sixth place with $3.6 million. Released by A24 in 1,600 North American theaters, the film, loosely inspired by “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” stars Powell as a man attempting to inherit a $28 billion fortune by eliminating his family members. The film received a “rotten” 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Psycho Killer,” released by 20th Century Studios, performed poorly, opening outside the top 10 with $1.6 million in ticket sales from 1,110 theaters. Audience reception mirrored critical reviews, with only 31% of ticket buyers indicating they would “definitely recommend” it.

Looking Ahead

The year’s box office is currently running about 5% ahead of last year, and Dergarabedian anticipates an increase with the release of “Scream 7” next weekend .

“It’s been a kind of rollercoaster ride at the box office,” he said.
