Brad Marchand Faces Potential Surgery, Panthers Playoff Push Continues
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Brad Marchand will undergo evaluation this week to determine if surgery is needed to address a recurring lower-body injury, Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice announced Monday. The 37-year-old forward previously missed 10 games leading up to the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where he won a silver medal with Team Canada.
Injury History and Current Status
Marchand registered one assist in four games during the Olympic tournament. Maurice indicated the decision on whether to proceed with surgery will focus on getting Marchand back to full health. “There will be a decision made on the best way to get him back to 100%,” Maurice said. “Even if there is no operation, we are still talking about something long term. It won’t take a few days. It will rather be counted in weeks.”
The Panthers coach revealed Marchand has been managing the injury for several months. “He’s been dealing with something for a few months, and we’ve been able to handle it,” Maurice stated. “We were really happy and a little surprised that this situation didn’t present itself sooner.” Maurice added that the injury worsened during a recent road trip, prompting the require for a more definitive course of action.
Marchand has a history of surgeries, including a sports hernia repair after the 2023-24 season and hip surgery following the 2021-22 season.
Panthers Playoff Outlook and Seth Jones Update
Despite the injury concerns surrounding Marchand, who is second on the Panthers in goals (27) and points (54) in 52 games, the team remains focused on its playoff aspirations. Florida (31-29-3) currently trails the Boston Bruins by 11 points for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Panthers will resume play Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings (7 p.m. ET).
In other injury news, Panthers defenseman Seth Jones is also nearing a return. Jones fractured his collarbone on January 2nd during the 2026 Winter Classic. Maurice estimates Jones is approximately eight weeks into a six-to-eight-week recovery timeline.
“Seth had a timeline of six to eight weeks, and he’ll probably develop it to eight weeks,” Maurice said. “He can take contact, but his injury needs to heal and that hasn’t happened yet. We believe he is going in the right direction. Best-case scenario, he would miss another week and then be back. But we don’t know yet.”
