Brantford Dental Patients Warned to Get Tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C
Patients of a former Brantford dentist are being advised to undergo blood testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV following concerns about inadequate sterilization practices. The warning comes after an investigation by the local health unit revealed lapses in infection prevention and control at the clinic.
Investigation and Clinic Closure
The investigation was prompted by a complaint received on October 29, 2025, regarding infection control practices at the office of Dr. George Chan on St. Paul Avenue. A comprehensive inspection was conducted on November 3, 2025, leading to the permanent closure of the practice.
Patient Notification and Testing Recommendations
Dr. Jason Malenfant, the Medical Officer of Health, has sent letters to patients who received treatment at Dr. Chan’s clinic, advising them to arrange blood tests for the three viruses. The health unit is providing pre-filled requisition forms to facilitate testing through healthcare providers or walk-in clinics. Patients who received dental work since August 26, 2025, are advised to undergo testing again after a six-month period.
Infection Control Lapses Identified
The inspection report, available on the health unit website, detailed numerous issues related to infection prevention and control. These included improper use of protective gloves, inadequate storage of sterilized items, failure to disinfect certain items, deficiencies in documentation, and concerns regarding the efficacy of ultrasonic cleaning equipment. Specifically, the report noted that clean and sterile instruments were stored unpackaged and sterilized packages were stored in a manner that compromised their integrity.
Recommendations for Patients Awaiting Test Results
While awaiting test results, the health unit recommends that patients adhere to strict safety precautions, including:
- Avoiding tattoos and piercings
- Using condoms during sexual activity
- Not sharing personal items such as razors, nail clippers, toothbrushes, needles, or glucose monitoring devices
- Properly cleaning visible blood from wounds or spills
