Brazilian Navy Prepares to Commission First Tamandaré-Class Frigate

On April 24, 2026, the Brazilian Navy will officially commission its first Tamandaré-class frigate, marking a significant milestone in the country’s naval modernization efforts. The vessel, designated F200 and named after the class, represents the culmination of years of development under Brazil’s National Maritime Strategy and the Surface Fleet Renewal Programme (PROSUPER).

Built by the Águas Azuis Consortium – comprising thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defesa & Segurança, and Atech – at the Itajaí shipyard, the frigate was launched on August 9, 2024. It has since undergone extensive testing, including live-fire drills with its 76 mm gun and MK54 torpedo systems in Guanabara Bay and along the Rio de Janeiro coast. These trials, authorized by the Brazilian Navy, have focused on validating the integration and performance of combat systems ahead of operational deployment.

The Tamandaré-class frigate displaces approximately 3,500 tonnes and measures 107.2 meters in length. It features a flight deck and hangar capable of accommodating helicopters such as the S-70B Seahawk or H225M. With a crew of around 130 personnel, the ship is powered by a CODAD propulsion system delivering 21,280 kW, enabling a maximum speed of 25.5 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles.

Armament includes a 12-cell vertical launch system for Sea Ceptor surface-to-air missiles, eight MANSUP anti-ship missiles, twin triple Mark 54 torpedo tubes, an Oto Melara 76 mm Super Rapid gun, a 30 mm Sea Snake gun, and smaller caliber weapons for close-in defense. Sensor suites integrate the Hensoldt TRS-4D AESA radar, Atlas ASO 713 hull-mounted sonar, Thales STIR 1.2 fire control radar, and various electronic warfare and identification systems.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced during Brazil’s participation at the Hannover Industrial Fair that negotiations are underway to acquire four additional Tamandaré-class frigates, expanding the planned fleet from four to eight vessels. This expansion underscores the Brazilian government’s commitment to strengthening naval capabilities in the Blue Amazon – the country’s vast maritime domain.

The official incorporation ceremony for F200 will accept place in Rio de Janeiro on April 24, 2026. Upon commissioning, the frigate will enter active service with the Brazilian Navy’s surface fleet, enhancing the nation’s ability to conduct maritime security, surveillance, and power projection operations.

As Brazil advances its naval ambitions, the Tamandaré-class frigate stands as a symbol of technological progress, industrial collaboration, and strategic foresight in safeguarding national interests at sea.
