Early Life and Career
Born on October 2, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Brent Renaud pursued his passion for storytelling through film. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in sociology from Columbia University.1 Together with his brother Craig, he produced films for HBO, Vice News, and The New York Times, focusing on humanistic stories from conflict zones and marginalized communities around the world.1
Reporting from the Front Lines
The Renaud brothers covered numerous global hotspots, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, political crises in Egypt and Libya, conflicts in Africa, the Mexican drug war, and the refugee crisis in Central America.1 From 2004 to 2005, they filmed the Discovery Channel series Off to War, documenting the experiences of Arkansas reservists during the Iraq conflict and their families.1
Death in Ukraine
On March 13, 2022, Brent Renaud was killed by Russian soldiers in Irpin, Ukraine, while reporting on the refugee crisis.1 He was traveling with fellow journalist Juan Arredondo, who was also wounded in the attack.2 Ukrainian officials reported the circumstances of his death.1 Craig Renaud traveled to Ukraine to retrieve his brother’s body and assist in getting Arredondo to safety, with the facilitate of Ukrainian journalists.3

The documentary “Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud,” directed by Craig Renaud, is a tribute to Brent’s life and work, and a broader commentary on the risks faced by journalists worldwide.3 The film has been nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 98th Academy Awards.2 Craig Renaud has stated that the film evolved to honor not only his brother but also the over 400 journalists killed globally since Brent’s death.3
