UK Aims for "Closer Relationship" with EU in May Summit
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to host EU leaders for a special Brexit summit in the UK on May 19th, signaling a renewed push for stronger ties with the bloc after years of strained relations.
European Council President Antonio Costa confirmed the meeting in a press conference following a meeting with Starmer on Monday, stating that the summit will focus on "building a closer relationship" between the UK and the EU.
"Today we talked about defense and security, but the United Kingdom and the European Union want to do more together," Costa said, adding that the summit will serve as a platform to "reset" and strengthen ties between the two entities.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed the upcoming meeting, stating that discussions will focus on deepening security cooperation and exploring other areas of common interest.
This summit comes amidst a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at patching up the fractured relationship between the UK and the EU. While both sides have expressed a willingness to move forward constructively, concrete details regarding the structure and scope of closer cooperation remain scant.
The format of the summit and the participation of individual member states are yet to be finalized. However, the meeting represents a significant step in Starmer’s ambition to reintegrate the UK into Europe on a more meaningful level.
