Brian Cashman and the Real Reason Behind Juan Soto’s Mets Signing
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has a reputation for being a shrewd negotiator, but even he seemed surprised by the media’s narrative surrounding Juan Soto’s decision to sign with the New York Mets. Many reports suggested that extravagant perks, like a private suite, were key factors in swaying Soto’s decision. However, Cashman insists that money ultimately spoke the loudest.
Cashman drew a parallel between Soto’s situation and his own experience signing CC Sabathia in 2008. “The truth of the matter is I hit him over the head with a big bunch of cash,” Cashman admitted, dismissing the idea that charisma or amenities played a major role.

He claims the Yankees also offer ample family amenities, including a suite, family room, and babysitting services. But ultimately Cashman acknowledges that the Mets were simply the higher bidder.
There might have been other factors at play, such as a misunderstanding with security at Yankee Stadium involving Soto’s family member. However, Cashman downplayed the incident and stressed that it was never brought to his attention.
In the end, the Juan Soto saga likely comes down to what it so often does in free agency: dollars and cents. Just like CC Sabathia a decade and a half ago, Soto chose the team that offered the most appealing financial package.
