Bridgerton Season 5 to Feature Groundbreaking Queer Love Story
Production is underway for the fifth season of Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton, which will center on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling in what is being hailed as the show’s first major queer love story. The upcoming season marks a significant step for the series, traditionally focused on heterosexual romances, and promises a nuanced portrayal of same-sex love within a historical context.
Francesca’s Journey and a New Romance
Hannah Dodd will reprise her role as Francesca Bridgerton, the introverted middle daughter of the Bridgerton family. The season will pick up two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling. As Francesca considers re-entering the marriage mart for practical reasons, her connection with Michaela Stirling (played by Masali Baduza), John’s cousin, deepens into something more emotionally complex.
Michaela, who returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate, will challenge Francesca’s pragmatic intentions and lead her to question her inner passions. This storyline represents a departure from Julia Quinn’s original novels, where Francesca’s romantic interest is a male character named Michael Stirling. Showrunner Jess Brownell adapted the character for the screen, reimagining Michael as Michaela.
A Groundbreaking Representation
The decision to focus on a sapphic relationship for an entire season of Bridgerton is being lauded as a significant moment for representation. Brownell emphasized the importance of depicting queer love, stating, “It feels groundbreaking…to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.” Attitude reports that the show aims to provide a “realistic view of queer love onscreen and give them a happily ever after.”
Baduza added that the show hopes to offer a positive and hopeful narrative for the queer community, demonstrating that love and happiness are attainable. The Independent notes Dodd’s sentiment that “Queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist – so they deserve a love story just like everybody else.”
Production and Cast
Season five is currently in production. Hannah Dodd debuted as Francesca in the third season, although Masali Baduza first appeared in the season three finale. The role of Francesca was previously played by Ruby Stokes in the first two seasons, before a recast due to scheduling conflicts.
Showrunner Jess Brownell praised the chemistry between Dodd and Baduza, describing their friendship and support for each other as “beautiful.”
Looking Ahead
Bridgerton season five promises to be a landmark season for the series, offering a fresh perspective on love and relationships within the Regency era. The focus on Francesca and Michaela’s story is expected to resonate with audiences and contribute to the ongoing conversation about representation in television. Forbes highlights that this season marks the first time a same-sex romance has been the central focus of a Bridgerton season.
