UK Deploys Warship and Counter-Drone Tech to Cyprus Amid Regional Tensions

LONDON, March 3, 2026 – The United Kingdom has bolstered its military presence in Cyprus, deploying the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon and sending helicopters equipped with counter-drone technology. The move comes after a British base on the island was targeted by an Iranian-made drone on Monday, escalating tensions in the region.

Responding to Drone Attack

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the deployment on Tuesday evening, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to the security of Cyprus and British personnel stationed there. “We’re continuing our defensive operations and I’ve just spoken with [Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides] to let him understand that we are sending helicopters with counter-drone capabilities and HMS Dragon is to be deployed to the region,” Starmer stated in a social media post according to the Cyprus Mail.

HMS Dragon: A Key Asset

HMS Dragon is one of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 air defence destroyers, described as “one of the most advanced warships in the world” as reported by the Mirror. The vessel will provide enhanced air defence capabilities in the region.

Broader Regional Context

The deployment is occurring amidst a wider escalation of tensions involving Iran. The Independent reports that the move follows attacks on UK military bases and broader conflict involving the US and Iran. The UK has also allowed the US to utilize British bases for defensive measures.

Evacuation Plans for British Nationals

The government is also preparing for potential evacuation of British nationals from Gulf states. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has stated that approximately 130,000 British citizens have already registered with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for assistance according to The Independent.

Commitment to Allies

Starmer reiterated his government’s commitment to acting in the interest of the UK and its allies. “We will always act in the interest of the UK and our allies,” he affirmed.
