British Couple Jailed in Iran on Espionage Charges

Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a British couple from East Sussex, have been sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran on charges of espionage, according to family members and reports from British officials. The sentencing comes after over a year of detention following their arrest in January 2025 while on a round-the-world motorcycle trip.

Arrest and Charges

The Foremans were detained by Iranian authorities in January 2025 while traveling through the country. They were subsequently charged with espionage, allegations which they consistently deny. The couple is being held separately in Tehran’s Evin prison, known for its leverage in detaining political prisoners and for alleged inhumane conditions. BBC News reports the couple endured “dire” conditions for 13 months, including exposure to “dirt, vermin, and violence,” and experienced weight loss.

Government Response

The sentencing has drawn strong condemnation from the British government. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called the sentence “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.” The Guardian reports Cooper stated the government will “pursue this case relentlessly” until the couple is safely returned to the UK. Cooper also emphasized the couple’s welfare as a priority, promising continued consular assistance to them and their families.

Family’s Plea and Concerns

Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman’s son, expressed deep concern for his parents’ welfare and the lack of transparency in the judicial process. He revealed the family was informed of the 10-year sentence last week. Sky News reports Bennett stated the trial lasted only three hours, and his parents were not allowed to present a defense. He also noted that no evidence of spying has been presented by Iranian authorities.

Previous Advocacy Efforts

The case has drawn attention from individuals who have previously experienced imprisonment in Iran. In January, Bennett joined Anoosheh Ashoori, a British-Iranian who was imprisoned for five years, and Richard Ratcliffe, whose wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was also detained in Iran, at a demonstration calling on the government to do more to secure the Foremans’ release. They delivered a petition with over 70,000 signatures to No 10 Downing Street.

Couple’s Statements

Prior to the sentencing, Lindsay Foreman spoke to the BBC, stating her trip was part of a “global initiative to focus on the good” and expressing a continued desire to “find what connects us.” Craig Foreman previously shared that the infrequent visits with his wife were sustaining him during their detention, noting the prison is only 70 meters away and they are able to witness each other once a month. The Independent reports this connection is “the only thing that’s keeping us going right now.”

As of February 19, 2026, the British government continues to perform towards securing the release of Lindsay and Craig Foreman.
