Arrest at Quito Airport Ends International Manhunt
Ecuadorian authorities have detained 46-year-old British national Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith in connection with the death of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba. The arrest follows the discovery of Villalba’s body inside a suitcase in a Bogota apartment on June 18.
A Brutal Discovery in Bogota
The investigation began the day the remains were found. Colombian prosecutors allege that Foster-Smith beat Villalba to death, attempted to conceal her body in a suitcase, and subsequently fled the scene. The grim nature of the crime triggered an immediate international response.

Cross-Border Pursuit and Capture
Colombian law enforcement secured an arrest warrant, prompting Interpol to issue a Red Notice. Bogota’s mayor, Carlos Fernando Galan, confirmed that the operation relied on cross-border cooperation, including vital assistance from the Dorset Police in the United Kingdom. Foster-Smith was ultimately apprehended at Quito International Airport.
A History of Stalking
Public records reveal a troubling criminal past. In 2023, Foster-Smith served a two-year and two-month prison sentence for stalking offenses. Following his release, Poole Magistrates’ Court issued a stalking prevention order in January. The court-mandated conditions were rigorous, requiring mandatory regular contact with police, the provision of updated residential and vehicle details, a total prohibition on contacting victims, and strict restrictions on the use of electronic communication devices.
Diplomatic and Legal Fallout
The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is providing assistance to the detained man. “We are supporting a British man who has been detained in Ecuador and are in touch with the local authorities,” a spokesperson said. As the Colombian Attorney General’s Office confirms the suspect remains in custody, the case now pivots to proceedings. The timeline for his transfer to Bogota to face formal charges remains subject to international legal protocols, while the Dorset Police have been approached for comment.
