New Theater Tech Certification Program Launches at Northwood High

Northwood High School is now offering a new certification program in theater technology, providing students with valuable skills and a potential pathway to careers in the performing arts. The program, spearheaded by theater teacher Mac Low, aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical demands of the industry.

What is the Theater Tech Certification?

The Theater Tech Certification isn’t just another elective; it’s a focused, skills-based program designed to equip students with the technical expertise needed to succeed in various roles behind the scenes of theatrical productions. This includes areas like lighting, sound, stage management, and set construction. The program culminates in a nationally recognized certification, demonstrating a student’s competency to potential employers or colleges.

“We noticed a real need,” explains Low. “Students were graduating with a passion for theater, but frequently enough lacked the specific, demonstrable skills that employers were looking for. This certification provides that proof of proficiency.”

key Areas of Focus

  • Lighting design & Operation: Students learn about lighting instruments, circuitry, color mixing, and how to create effective lighting cues. Why it matters: lighting isn’t just about visibility; it sets the mood, directs the audience’s focus, and enhances the storytelling.
  • Sound Engineering: This covers microphone techniques, sound mixing, audio playback systems, and troubleshooting. why it matters: Clear and impactful sound is crucial for dialog, music, and sound effects, all contributing to the audience’s experience.
  • Stage Management: Students develop organizational skills, learn to create and maintain prompt books, manage rehearsals, and coordinate cues during performances. Why it matters: Stage managers are the backbone of a production, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely.
  • Set Construction & Scenic Painting: This involves building sets, understanding construction techniques, and applying paint and textures to create realistic or stylized environments. Why it matters: The set provides the physical world of the play, immersing the audience in the story.

Why is this Certification Important?

In a competitive job market, having a recognized certification can considerably boost a student’s prospects. The Theater Tech Certification demonstrates a commitment to the field and a level of skill that sets graduates apart. It’s valuable for several reasons:

  • Career Opportunities: Opens doors to entry-level positions in theaters, concert venues, event production companies, and more.
  • College Admissions: strengthens college applications for students pursuing degrees in theater, technical theater, or related fields.
  • Skill Development: provides practical, hands-on experience that complements classroom learning.
  • Industry Recognition: The certification is aligned with industry standards, ensuring students are learning relevant and valuable skills.

How Does the Program Work?

The program is a two-year sequence, integrated into the existing theater curriculum. Students must complete a series of courses and practical projects in each of the key areas. A final portfolio and a practical exam are required to earn the certification.

“It’s a rigorous program, but it’s also incredibly rewarding,” says Low. “Students get to apply what they learn in real-world scenarios, working on our school productions and possibly even assisting with professional shows.”
