Brunswick Apartment Embraces Flexible Living and Personal Style
Susan Egan, retail innovation manager at Mecca, sought a well-designed living space that prioritized quality of life. Her search concluded in a mid-rise apartment building in Brunswick, Victoria, developed by Neometro and Milieu, chosen for its flexible floor plan and thoughtfully designed communal areas.
A Flexible Floor Plan
Egan, who began house hunting in 2020, was particularly drawn to the apartment’s layout. “The layout immediately stood out – I loved that the second bedroom had the flexibility to extend into a larger living space with the green sliding door,” she explained. This adaptability allowed for a dedicated dining area, a key requirement for entertaining.
Brunswick: A Familiar and Vibrant Locale
Having lived in Brunswick intermittently since her early 20s, Egan felt an immediate connection to the neighborhood. She appreciates its dynamic atmosphere, stating, “I’m never surprised by what I witness in Brunswick, and that keeps daily life engaging. You can go out for a drink, discover a novel band, and get your groceries all in the same block. It’s an effortless place to live and sometimes a hard place to leave.”
Personalizing the Space
Egan moved into the apartment in 2022 and began incorporating her personal style, which evolved further with the arrival of her partner, Peter Trusler. “When Pete moved in, it added another dimension to the decor,” she noted. Their styles complement each other – Trusler’s leaning towards antiques and a more masculine aesthetic, while Egan favors color and shine.
Sentimental and Functional Decor
The apartment’s furnishings are largely either personally meaningful or highly practical. Artwork by Trusler’s mother and a wall hanging gifted to Egan for her 40th birthday add sentimental value. Functional elements, such as an elegant wall-mounted lamp, are prioritized for apartment living, with a focus on furniture that is lightweight and multi-purpose, like a side table that also serves as a stool.
Collaboration with an Interior Decorator
Egan enlisted the assist of her sister, interior decorator Lauren Egan, for design decisions and DIY projects. “We bounce around ideas, she pushes me to be more adventurous, and has helped me land some amazing pieces,” Egan shared.
Subtle Customizations
Minimal changes were made to the apartment’s structure. The main bedroom was painted a calming shade of blue, and a green pinboard was created in the kitchen to add a practical and visually appealing feature.
A Sense of Home
Unlike previous residences where she moved frequently, Egan feels a strong sense of belonging in this apartment. She appreciates having a vibrant space in Brunswick that meets her household’s needs without excess. Her favorite spot in the apartment is on the couch by the window, watching the trains go by.
