Philippe Touwaide, the federal ombudsman for Brussels Airport, has been suspended for one month following allegations of conflicts of interest and a prior legal conviction. The suspension stems from reports by the French-language weekly Le Vif, which revealed that Touwaide simultaneously served as a director for an action group opposing noise pollution from the airport. This dual role is prohibited under Belgian law. Touwaide was convicted in 2024 of defamation and harassment against airport executives, though he has appealed the verdict.

Touwaide also faces potential criminal charges – up to two years in prison – for allegedly intimidating Brussels Airport CEO, Arnaud Feist.

Minister Crucke announced the one-month suspension during a session of the Chamber of Representatives, responding to questions from Kjell Vander Elst (Anders), Britt Huybrechts (Vlaams Belang), and Oskar Seuntjens (Vooruit). Crucke stated that his ministry will hear from Touwaide while the “competent disciplinary authority” assesses potential further actions. He emphasized that Touwaide is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Crucke also indicated a review of the regulations governing the airport’s ombudsman service may be undertaken.

Political Reactions

Kjell Vander Elst highlighted a “long history of problems” between local residents, the airport, and the ombudsman’s office, expressing satisfaction with Crucke’s “decisive approach.” Britt Huybrechts of the Vlaams Belang also welcomed the plan of action.

The Vlaams Belang has gone further, demanding Touwaide’s resignation, citing the conflict of interest and the prior conviction as disqualifying. Huybrechts criticized the lack of term limits, legal framework, and evaluation processes for the ombudsman position, calling for structural reforms.
