BTS Embarks on Global Tour Following Seoul Concert and New Album Release

South Korean megastars BTS reunited for their first show in nearly four years in Seoul, captivating enormous crowds and livestreaming the K-pop extravaganza to millions worldwide. The performance marked the launch of a months-long global tour spanning the US, Europe, and Asia.

Return from Hiatus and New Album

Widely lauded as the biggest boy band in the world, BTS began a hiatus in 2022 to allow its seven members – RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook – to fulfill their mandatory military service. The Seoul concert celebrated their return, featuring songs from their newly released fifth album, ARIRANG, alongside hits like “Dynamite” and “Mikrokosmos.”

The free concert, held at Gwanghwamun Square, drew an estimated 260,000 fans, making it the largest public concert in South Korea’s history, despite only 22,000 holding ‘Golden Tickets’ for attendance. “It’s been a long journey but now we are finally here!” exclaimed BTS’s leader, RM, to enthusiastic cheers. Fellow member Jimin added, “We are finally here and seeing you again… All seven of us standing on the stage together makes me so happy.” J-Hope declared, “BTS 2.0 is just getting started.”

ARIRANG: A Mature Sound

The concert coincided with the release of ARIRANG, a 14-track album named after a traditional Korean folk song often considered the country’s unofficial national anthem. The album features collaborations with Western artists and producers, blending rap, heavy beats, and experimental sounds. According to university professor Lee Ji-young, the album demonstrates a “wider range of genres” compared to their earlier work, resulting in a “more mature and expansive feel.”

Global Tour Anticipation

The world tour is expected to generate significant revenue, potentially surpassing Taylor Swift’s recent Eras Tour in financial impact. The tour will also boost South Korea’s economy through tourism and merchandise sales, ranging from BTS dolls to everyday items like toothbrushes and canned tuna.

The tour begins in Goyang, South Korea, on April 9th and will span eleven months, encompassing 82 shows in 34 cities across 23 countries, including approximately 30 shows in North America.

RM’s Solo Work

RM, born Kim Nam-joon on September 12, 1994, initially gained recognition in the underground Korean hip-hop scene as Runch Randa before joining Big Hit Entertainment in 2010. He debuted as part of BTS in June 2013. Beyond his work with BTS, RM has released two mixtapes, RM (2015) and Mono (2018), with Mono reaching number 26 on the Billboard 200, a record for a Korean solo artist at the time. He officially debuted as a solo artist with the studio album Indigo in 2022, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200. His sophomore album, Right Place, Wrong Person, released in 2024, reached number five on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim. RM has collaborated with artists including Warren G, Krizz Kaliko, and Lil Nas X.
