Ongoing Effort to recapture Escaped Young Bulls in Brittany
A prolonged animal recovery operation is underway in Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche, a commune south of Rennes, following the escape of 43 young bulls – known as Taurillons – from a local farm on Saturday, June 21st, 2025. As of Wednesday, June 25th, one bull remains at large. Authorities are focusing their efforts on a safe recapture, prioritizing the animal’s well-being over lethal measures. according to Mayor Sébastien Guéret, the remaining bull has been located in a wooded area north of the town, near Vallon.
Mobilization of Emergency Services
The situation has prompted a significant response from local emergency services. Gendarmerie units, firefighters, and lieutenants de Louveteries – specialized volunteers tasked with wildlife management for state agencies – have been actively involved in the recapture efforts since the initial breakout. These lieutenants de Louveteries play a crucial role, possessing expertise in handling and assessing potentially hazardous animals in rural environments.
Recovery and Arduous Decisions
Initial recovery efforts on monday resulted in the safe recapture of 19 Taurillons. However, the aggressive behavior of approximately twenty of the escaped animals necessitated their humane euthanasia by the lieutenants de Louveteries. The councilor explained that despite attempts to tranquilize the animals, sedatives proved ineffective, posing an unacceptable risk to both the recovery teams and the local population. This situation highlights the challenges inherent in managing large animal escapes, where public safety and animal welfare are frequently enough in conflict. Further progress was made during the week, with an additional three Taurillons successfully brought back into custody. The ongoing operation underscores the complexities of rural animal control and the dedication of local authorities to resolving the situation responsibly.
