Burt, Iconic Crocodile From ‘Crocodile Dundee,’ Dies at Over 90

Burt, the legendary saltwater crocodile who starred alongside Paul Hogan in the 1986 classic film “Crocodile Dundee,” has passed away at an estimated age of over 90. Crocosaurus Cove, the Australian reptile park where Burt spent his final years, announced his death on social media, marking the end of an era for the beloved reptile.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic Saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee,” Crocosaurus Cove wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of Burt. “Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, estimated to be over 90 years old, marking the end of an incredible era.”

Burt’s Hollywood Rise

Starring Hogan as the rugged Mick Dundee and Linda Kozlowski as reporter Sue Charlton, “Crocodile Dundee” was inspired by the true-life exploits of Rod Ansell, an Australian cattle grazier and buffalo hunter. The film, made on a shoestring budget of under $10 million, became a global phenomenon. It was the highest-grossing film in Australia upon release and the second-highest-grossing film in the U.S. that year, becoming the highest-grossing non-U.S. film ever at that time.

From Reynolds River to Crocosaurus Cove

“Burt’s life story is one of strength, resilience, and a personality as bold as the Top End itself,” Crocosaurus Cove continued in its Instagram post. “Captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River, Burt became one of the most recognised crocodiles in the world, appearing in Crocodile Dundee and helping to shape Australia’s image as a land of rugged natural beauty and awe-inspiring wildlife.”

In 2008, Burt made his way to Crocosaurus Cove, where he became a prominent ambassador for crocodile education. He was known for his independent demeanor, confirmed bachelor status—evident during his earlier years at a crocodile farm—and fiery temperament, earning the respect of both caretakers and visitors.

“Burt was truly one of a kind. He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures,” Crocosaurus Cove noted in its tribute. “While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years. Visitors from around the globe marvelled at his impressive size and commanding presence, especially at feeding time.
