Traffic Fatality and Closures Reported on Trakia Motorway in Bulgaria
A fatal traffic accident occurred on the Trakia motorway (A1) in Bulgaria on Monday, March 23, 2026, causing significant traffic disruptions. The incident involved a bus and a truck, resulting in one fatality and leaving another individual in critical condition.

According to reports, the accident took place shortly after Ihtiman, in the direction of Burgas, at kilometer 47. The driver of the bus died at the scene. A passenger, aged 23, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Anna Hospital.
Initial information suggests the bus may have been carrying medical waste.
Traffic Management and Closures
The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) has temporarily diverted traffic at kilometer 47 towards Burgas into the overtaking lane. The active and emergency lanes are closed, and traffic is being regulated by Road Police teams.
This incident adds to existing traffic restrictions on the Trakia motorway due to ongoing repair works. As of March 23, 2026, sections of the highway are closed for repairs in the following areas:
- Sofia region (km 24-33)
- Pazardzhik region (km 90-98)
- Stara Zagora region (km 208-218)
- Sliven region (km 262-273)
In these repair zones, traffic is generally redirected to the lane heading towards Sofia, with one lane available for travel in each direction. Reversible traffic patterns are implemented during peak hours to enhance safety.
Ongoing Repair Works
Repair work on the Trakia motorway began on September 24, 2025, and is expected to continue. The repairs include full asphalt pavement replacement in sections and aim to improve road conditions and safety. The full completion of repairs is expected by November 30, 2026.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and allow for extra travel time when using the Trakia motorway.
