The Community of Busto Arsizio Honors “Little Warrior” Matteo Granata
The Sant’Anna district of Busto Arsizio, known locally as the “Villaggio,” has come together in a powerful display of solidarity to honor the memory of Matteo Granata. A four-year-old described by his community as a “little warrior,” Matteo passed away on April 30 after a battle with an incurable illness that was discovered only nine months prior.
On Saturday, May 9, residents gathered in the raised square in front of the Roby Bar to support Matteo’s parents, Mirko and Miriam Codespoti, and his grandparents. The gathering served as a focal point for several initiatives aimed at ensuring the young boy’s spirit and smile continue to inspire the neighborhood.
A Musical Tribute: “Un angelo su di noi”
Music has played a central role in the community’s grieving and healing process. Gioviz, a 23-year-old professional musician and rapper born and raised in Sant’Anna, dedicated a song titled “Un angelo su di noi” (An Angel Over Us) to Matteo. Gioviz, who has known Matteo’s parents since childhood, stated that the lyrics came “from the heart.”

The song was accompanied by a music video produced in collaboration with manager Guglielmo Tedesco. Featuring the residents of the neighborhood gathered at the Roby Bar, the video quickly gained traction on Instagram, surpassing 25,000 views within a few hours of its release.
Transforming Public Spaces into Lasting Memories
Beyond the musical tribute, the community is working to permanently weave Matteo’s name into the geography of the “Villaggio.” A petition has been launched to officially name the raised square—located between Matteo’s home and the kindergarten he attended—in his honor.

The initiative has received significant local political support. Simone Orsi, a city council member for the Lega, and Chiara Colombo, the assessor for educational policies, have both pledged their assistance. Orsi noted that the square is currently unnamed and serves as a symbolic location to keep Matteo’s memory alive. Assessor Colombo has proposed naming a classroom at Matteo’s former kindergarten after him.
A Legacy of Joy and Community Support
Matteo’s parents have focused their efforts on turning their grief into a positive impact for other children. Miriam Codespoti shared that they launched a fundraising campaign to donate a new playground to the local oratory, ensuring that Matteo’s memory is linked to the joy of other children rather than his illness.
The outpouring of support has extended across various local groups:
- The Roby Bar: The owners, who recently reopened the establishment as a community hub, helped promote the petition and previously hosted the baptism of Matteo’s younger sister.
- United 88: The Pro Patria Ultras group expressed their support, noting that Matteo’s father, Mirko, was one of their “lancia-cori” (chant leaders), and they have committed to helping the family in any way possible.
- Charitable Association: There are ongoing discussions to establish a formal association to promote charitable initiatives in Matteo’s name.
- Memorial Square: A petition is underway to name the square in front of Roby Bar in Busto Arsizio after Matteo.
- Musical Honor: Rapper Gioviz released the song and video “Un angelo su di noi,” which has reached tens of thousands of views.
- Philanthropic Goal: Fundraising is active to build a new playground at the Sant’Anna oratory.
- Institutional Support: Local government officials are assisting with the naming of the square and a kindergarten classroom.
As Busto Arsizio continues to support the Granata family, these initiatives transform a profound loss into a collective mission of kindness, ensuring that the “little warrior” of Sant’Anna remains a permanent part of the community he called home.
