BYU Basketball Star Richie Saunders’ Season Ends with Torn ACL

PROVO, UT – BYU Cougars guard Richie Saunders’ stellar college career has approach to a heartbreaking end. The senior suffered a torn ACL just 45 seconds into Saturday’s 90-86 overtime victory against Colorado, an injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. Saunders announced the injury on Sunday via Instagram.

A Heartbreaking Loss for BYU

The injury is a significant blow to the Cougars, who were hoping to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Kevin Young described the impact of Saunders’ injury, stating, “It sucked the life out of the gym, if I’m being honest. You never want to see an injury to any player, but definitely not to someone who’s the heart and soul of our team [and] bleeds BYU blue. Just didn’t like seeing it.” ESPN

Saunders, a First Team All-Big 12 selection, was averaging career highs in points (18.0 PPG), rebounds (5.8 RPG), assists (2.1 APG), and steals (1.7 SPG) this season. He finished his BYU career with over 1,500 points in 128 games, ranking among the program’s top 20 in several statistical categories. ESPN

Impact on the Cougars’ Tournament Prospects

BYU (19-6, 7-5 Big 12) now faces a challenging final stretch of the regular season without one of its key players. The Cougars have five Quad 1 opportunities remaining. ESPN

The team will need to rely more heavily on freshman AJ Dybantsa and point guard Robert Wright III, who combined for 59 points, 18 rebounds, and 12 assists in the win over Colorado. ESPN Wright posted a career-high 39 points in that game. Salt Lake Tribune

Looking Ahead

Even as Saunders’ absence is a major setback, BYU remains optimistic. Coach Young emphasized the need for other players to step up, noting the contributions of Tyler Mrus and Aleksej Kostic against Colorado. ESPN

The Cougars will need contributions from Kennard Davis Jr., Keba Keita, and reserves like Mihailo Boskovic and Khadim Mboup to maintain their competitiveness. ESPN

BYU’s next challenge comes on Wednesday with a road matchup against No. 1 Arizona. ESPN
