Cal Rugby Dominates BYU with 64-21 Victory

BERKELEY – The California rugby team secured a decisive 64-21 victory over Brigham Young University on Saturday, February 21, 2026, in their return to Witter Rugby Field. Eight different players scored tries in the impressive display of offensive power.

Early Setback, Quick Response

BYU struck first after an intercepted pass from Oliver Teague was capitalized on by Malae Tanuvasa, who scored a converted try. However, Cal responded swiftly with a try from Brice Muller in the 7th minute, following a lineout.

Bears Seize Control

Cal continued to build momentum, adding further tries through Filip Edstrom in the 13th minute and Solomon Williams in the 16th minute. A yellow card against BYU allowed Elliott Lewis to extend Cal’s lead with another try and a conversion by Edstrom, bringing the score to 28-7.

First-Half Dominance

Masi Koi added another try in the 25th minute and Oliver Teague scored just before halftime. Cal led 40-7 at the break.

Second-Half Reserves Shine

The second half saw Cal utilize its reserves, with Elliott Lewis scoring again in the 43rd minute. Freshman Oliver Sinclair, who substituted for the injured Filip Edstrom, also contributed a try in the 46th minute. Nate Comiskey and Michál de Beer added further scores, with de Beer making his second start of the season after recovering from a fall sevens injury.

BYU Late Scores, Cal Prevails

BYU managed two late tries, but Cal’s dominance was undeniable, securing a 64-21 victory.

Post-Match Reactions

Cal captain Rand Santos expressed gratitude to BYU for the match but noted areas for improvement. “We weren’t very happy with the three tries we allowed, and the turnovers we had, but I think getting a win matters. We’ll look to build on the match,” he said.

Vice-captain Cade Crist added, “BYU is always a good side, so it’s good to get a win, especially a large west coast win, so I’m happy with the result.”

BYU head coach Steve St. Pierre acknowledged Cal’s performance. “We knew that the standard was going to be high coming into here, and obviously our performance wasn’t up to that standard. All credit to Cal for coming out here and playing a good game.”

Cal head coach Jack Clark stated, “We appreciate the Cougars and wish them the best going forward. With a bye next week, that’s it for February. Our team needs to regroup for a challenging March.”
