Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Shatters Records, Fuels Game Pass Growth

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has launched with a bang, breaking records for both Xbox and the franchise as a whole. During Microsoft’s first-quarter earnings call for 2025, CEO Satya Nadella revealed that the game smashed day-one player and Game Pass subscriber records.

A Historic Launch

As the first Activision Blizzard title to launch day-and-date on Game Pass, Black Ops 6 has proven to be a major success. Unit sales on PlayStation and Steam also saw a significant jump, increasing by 60% year-over-year.

“This speaks to our strategy of meeting gamers where they are by enabling them to play more games across the screens they spend their time on,” said Nadella.

Boosting Game Pass Subscriptions

While the game’s performance on traditional platforms is impressive, its impact on Game Pass is even more notable. Microsoft CFO Amy Hood explained that the subscription model for Game Pass leads to revenue recognition over time:

“For players who play through Game Pass, the subscription revenue is recognised over time,” said Hood. “The game requires an online connection to play so even for players who purchase the standalone game, revenue recognition will also occur ratably over time.”

Microsoft’s Strong Q1 and the Activision Blizzard Acquisition

Overall, Microsoft reported a strong first quarter, with its Xbox content and services revenue surging 61% year-on-year. This success is undoubtedly fueled by the acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023.

The deal, which faced regulatory hurdles in the UK, EU, and US, has already yielded significant benefits for Microsoft. As part of the acquisition, Ubisoft secured cloud streaming rights for Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard titles for the next 15 years, while Sony and Nintendo have made binding agreements to keep Call of Duty on their platforms for the next decade.

Analysts React to Black Ops 6’s Success

Analysts had predicted that Black Ops 6 could boost Game Pass subscriptions by 2.5 million to 4 million. While some analysts suggested the launch on Game Pass might impact standalone sales, the game’s overall performance suggests otherwise.

The potential for Black Ops 6 to drive Game Pass subscriptions was a key topic in the latest episode of The GamesIndustry.biz Microcast.
